Water 2025

The Water 2025 Project will purchase and install on-farm delivery-site meters in Harlingen Irrigation District. The District is in the process of completing the Water Conservation Improvements Project, a project that includes a canal rehabilitation component and a Telemetry and Flow Measurement component, that will be the basis for the on-farm metering program. The measurement system will facilitate the District moving toward 100% volumetric pricing of water delivered to District water users.
The information generated by the meters will provide flow data useful in monitoring water usage and flows as well as for pricing water to irrigators. The resulting improved management information will facilitate more efficient water delivery within the District's delivery system and on-farm irrigation practices. On-farm savings are expected to occur as water users gain knowledge of the amount of water being used and the possibility of savings and incentives for reduced water usage. Associated energy savings will be realized with reduced pumping costs.
Similarly, reductions in the diversions from the Rio Grande may be possible as agricultural use is reduced by the introduction of volumetric pricing to water users and an increase in the On-Farm efficiency.
